It is 7:40 AM and I just finished the hell that is registering for classes. Ugh. So, my schedule for next semester is as follows: Intro to Anthopology (Not my 1st choice, but it meets a requirement, and I'm a Freshman.) Art History: Renaissance-Contemprorary(;D) Statistics(I decided to go with actual math for my reasoning requirement afterall.) World Politics (Which is NOT the same as Comparative Government. I checked this time.) All in all, pretty sweet.
Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving, and I can't wait to see you all over Christmas, or this weekend, whichever :D!
Come a little bit closer... Let me look at you I gave you the benefit of doubt, it's true But keep in mind my darling Not every saint is a fool Source
So, this month's topic for Debate is "Colleges and Universities in the United States should end their early admissions programs," and the more I read, the more depressing things become. Although my odds of winning the lottery are still significantly lower than being accepted into a top college, it sure doesn't feel like it's all that much.
Facts for everyone to chew on: - Last year 49% of Princeton's entering class was accepted under Early Decision. Total enrollment: 1230 students - At Brown University for the entering class of 2004, 41% of applicants with a relative attending Brown were accepted as opposed to 15% of regular, non-alumni, applicants - A table I found highlighting the entering class of 2001 and their average tests scores and such between regular and early admissions breakdowns; essentially, the average test score is around 10 points lower for early applicants as compared to regular applicants
Things like this make applying to college suck. Do I fully expect to attend the U next year? Yes, but I would still really like to go to Columbia. Delving into the inner workings of college admission about a week before you plan on applying to all these colleges really lowers your expectations, which is probably a good thing, but I would like to be optimistic some day. Just once, and only for a little while.
All this leads back to the fact that I have two pro cases written and I still don't have a con case written and I need two by tomorrow around 11AM. I have bits and pieces of a con case and an idea I'm mulling over but I think it would be a counter plan, so I don't think I can use it.
Still, isn't that what you want to know? How incredibly low your chances of being accepted into college are? And why can't people exist in the middle? No one talks about those of us that fall in the middle on the economic scale. It's frustrating.
All right, I'll go finish my con cases. But aren't you depressed by the stats I just dropped? If you aren't, I can drop some more just for good measure.
Okay, so, it wasn't so much a challenge as a statement, but I finally tracked down my camera's USB cords just so I could post this baby:
Yes, yes, this is my little 9th grade self in all of her honesty. I don't know how well anyone can read this (which is probably a good thing) but, here goes.
Okay, I'm not really sure how this thing works, but somewhere in this muddle are two pages from my 9th grade self, some random street in London, and a photograph of my dropsy goldfish. Much love to all! Happy Thanksgiving!
Wow, I haven't really been over here in a little while! I've missed you all very much. It's fun to hear about everyone's happenings, and that you're all doing well.

Well, as you've all probably inferred, I have been nasty feverish for the last few days. I won't give you the ugly details, but just that I pretty much locked myself in my room and slept a lot. I really don't have that much to say. I've just been kind of unconscious. I had a lot of strange dreams though. At least half of them were set in a post-modern castle. We were searching for something, but none of us really knew what it was, just that we had to find it immediately or a whole bunch of people would be in a whole lot of trouble. I say "we" as meaning Linda, Shelty, Logan, Kofi Annan, Mrs. Niemi, and Kelsi Donut. I blame the oyster crackers and C-SPAN.

Anyone who is seeking environmentally friendly Holiday gifts... the Union of Concerned Scientists has heard your calls and pleas. I'm a fan of the organic dark chocolate dreidel, myself.
I'm going to Michigan tomorrow! Yay for Grandparents and air planes!

I saw Casino Royale on Saturday (pre-Asian-Bird-Flu-Episode). I must say, Daniel Craig is damned sexy. Then again, so is James Bond. And Eva Green AKA Vesper AKA "Moneypenny?!?!But didn't she..." well, if you care that much, you've already seen this movie.
In short, Casino Royale= fast action, fast cars, and fast girls. If you're looking for an interesting, mind-numbing, secret-agent-man fantasy, this is your flick. If you are looking for a flawless, intriguing, unpredictable plot and plot alone- this is not so much for you. It is a great just-for-fun movie, though. Some of the fight scenes run pretty long, but the characters make up for it, especially the play off of Bond and Vesper.
Oh, and did I mention that Daniel Craig is damned sexy? Well, he is.
*cough*hughjackmanisstillbetter*cough* *cough*soiskeanureeveseventhoughhecan'tact*cough* Oh, dear, I hope I'm not picking up a cold now...!

My goldfish has Dropsy. It is really tragic. His name is Spotty. He is nine years old. He started off as a class pet when my brother was in first grade; he's come a long way since then. Unfortunately, his habit for eating snails, and my father's strange desire to add lake-bred snails to the fishtank, have caused him to suffer from severe constipation and bloating. Hence? The dropsy. Either that or he has cancer. We're not really sure. Either way, I am doing all in my power to save him. If any of you are also worried that your goldfish may be suffering from dropsy, here are some of the symptoms:
-Pineconing (scales sticking out like a pinecone) -Swelling/bloating -Puffy eyes -Constipation

Warning: This is pretty much all about Debate, so if you're not interested, move along. For everyone else, I tend to be long winded. I'm sorry.
Our darling Sara has been sick for the past two days, which is perfectly okay, but that left me partner-less for the Debate championship tonight. After convincing Sara at 2:50 there was no way she could come in and Debate after sleeping for fourteen consecutive hours (and then sleeping four more hours after that), I started my job as the official tab room tracker.
I was going to judge a round or two and keep track of ballots as they came in since both Open and Novice Public Forum were power ranked. Great in theory; everything set and then we're just waiting; and waiting and waiting for DGF to show up to start the meet. In the end, we have to sub in judges (a newbie and Borash) for the DGF judges and both of the Grand Rapids teams earned an automatic win and the DGF teams earned a loss. That's fine and dandy, not that bad; except we had double booked rooms, so I got to run around finding open rooms to use while making sure I didn't lose anyone in the process.
I met the older Korynta today; she was a judge for DGF. The other judge for DGF was a really cute guy whose first name I don't know, but dark hair, eye brow piercing; good looking to say the least. Back to Korynta: interesting. Not what I pictured, but I can see it now.
After Round 1 things were considerably smoother, ballots came in relatively well and there wasn't any more judge problems. It worked out about as perfectly as one could hope for; what worked out even better was the 25 point win Deebs gave to Luke and his bombastic partner round one.
I judged Round 4 which was a first; it was interesting to hear the argument from both sides. Obviously neither of the teams knew I knew the topic, but it was nice to see how other teams Debate, especially in Novice.
Rianna, darling, I talked to Pritschet about you judging at the Forest Lake tournament and he liked the sound of that. So, we'll talk about it this coming weekend, and I should probably mention it to Deebs to make sure it will happen. We'll probably be taking two vehicles, so if we go down the night before, Deebs and I for sure will come and get you in the morning.
Qualley judged for the first time. That was great. I love Qualley; she's awesome. I might not love AP Spanish every day, but I do really like her. Plus, her with Pritschet and Deebs; oh wow. We handed her a dictionary when she went off to judge; she turned a nice shade of red and glared at the two of them laughing in Deebs's room. I really hope we need another driver for Nat Quals; if she could come, that was be a lot of fun.
In the end, I came to the conclusion that next year without someone there to make sure that every little bit of their ideas are covered, life is going to suck for them.
Plus, I briefly met the infamous Piff today. Wow, does he look like a Freeman... Can't really say much else about him because I talked with him and Deebs for about three minutes before I was torn away by Pritschet with some mini-crisis.
Oh, and Kubas and Garrett took first, as expected, and Sonya took first in LD with Brian taking 3rd. I don't have much else to add. That's kind of a brief rundown of my night.
I am essentially home free and it's wonderful. *nods* I had my last class before break today. Tonight, I have a ton of music stuff to do, but mom and I are staying in a hotel and all I have to do tomorrow is work then wait for Kayla to get off work so I can go home. I am so freaking excited. :D No more thinking 'til Monday! *dances around room*
I am on a quest. It is a quest for humanity, truth, and understanding- call it a grail quest, if you'd like. Either way, I'm trying to collect something like 25 different opinions on the topic of the ever elusive idea of "success," which seems to be a goal, or even an obsession, of most people on the dry Earth. I was hoping you all would help me in my quest by answering my three magical "quest"ions.
Question 1: What is success?
Question 2: How is success measured?
Question 3: What defines a successful life?
Thanks all!

What we hunger for perhaps more than anything else is to be known in our full humanness, and yet that is often just what we also fear more than anything else....Little by little we come to accept instead the highly edited version which we put forth in hope that the world will find it more acceptable than the real thing. ~~~Frederick Buechner, Whistling in the Dark~~~
The fact that her philosophy prof no longer thinks she's a complete idiot. 89%. B+. which is significantly better than her last score of 68%. Maybe she can keep her scholarship money after all.
"You have a Midland accent" is just another way of saying "you don't have an accent." You probably are from the Midland (Pennsylvania, southern Ohio, southern Indiana, southern Illinois, and Missouri) but then for all we know you could be from Florida or Charleston or one of those big southern cities like Atlanta or Dallas. You have a good voice for TV and radio.
I had the most amazing weekend I've had here in college land. So, my mom came down for the weekend, and we went shopping. Why you ask? The men folk in our family are hunting this weekend. We had official license to spend exactly the same amount they spent on hunting on what ever we wanted. So, my mom drove down, and we stayed at my aunt's house. On Saturday morning, we went for breakfast, then hit up a chocolate show. That's right, an entire convention center filled with samples of various chocolates. We were in heavan. WAIT!! Not quite yet. We were standing outside the pearly gates, because our day wasn't over yet. We then went to a yarn shop, where three knitters can so quite a bit of damage. My mom and I managed to escape with only about $40 worth of yarn. My aunt Stacy was not so fortunate. She had $200 worth when we left. She'll be knitting for a while. At this point, we were starting to get kind of hungry. Maybe we should find a salad? Or not. We went to Caribou, and had christmas lattes and cookies for lunch. Over the course of lunch, we find out that my mom is a little short on winter clothes. What do you know, there's a TJ Max on our way home! We bought my mom a whole new outfit, and I found a bag to house my various knitting projects. We finally decided to call it a day, and went back to Stacy's, where we ordered chinese food and watched movies for the rest of the night. (Maybe this is the point where I say neither Stacy or I are actually hunting widows. I'm not married, nor do I have a boyfriend. Stacy's husband was at home this whole time. OH WELL!!) Sunday, we woke up, went for lunch at this place that serves really good sandwiches, then went grocery shopping for me. My mom then dropped me off at home, and went back to Brainerd, which was the low point of the weekend. I do have other news to report from earlier in the week. I officially had the funniest call ever on Thursday. I call this guy, who graduated in '73 by the way, on the west coast. It's about 7 there when I call. He answers says, "Oh, this is Hamline? I'm kind of in the middle of dinner." "Okay," I say, "Would it be okay if I called you back later tonight?" "No! I might get lucky tonight!" Rianna, shocked at what she just heard, pauses for a moment, to which the man replies, "You said you were a freshman? You'll understand what I mean when you're a sophomore." Click. I knew exactly what he was talking about, I was just shocked that I was hearing this from a man that is at least 55. Upon further reflection, I realized he was probably just excited, as it was probably the first, and last, time in many years. In conclusion, I apologize to all who may have tried to get ahold of me this weekend, I was in heavan, and I'm pretty sure that's a long distance call.
Angels fly in the air tonight. Saying, Wasn't it just like swimming Out on the lake? Stars collide, and the air's alive. Or was it just like those promises that you made On our last night? Source
So, I attended all of my classes all week long with the exception of about 30 minutes of Chemistry between Tuesday and Wednesday and all of Psychology on Tuesday. And just in case anyone's wondering, yes, that's really weird.
I did go to the Veteran's Day ceremony today; however because Kara conveniently forgot her Spanish essay in Borash's copy of The World is Flat, she did not have to sit with Peterson and Hewitt's classes during the ceremony. Hooray! This involved Kara sneaking off to Borash's room when Peterson had the brilliant idea that we should go down early so we could sit together and Kara telling Mick she'd come and find them there (as if I'm that stupid...). The speaker was the same guy I heard at the Rotary meeting on Tuesday, and I liked his speech to the Rotary club better. Some of it was similar, but it was still pretty different. His speech to the Rotary is one I would have loved that one of you guys would have heard because it was really interesting; he talked about where he was in Iraq and what he did and the culture of the Iraqi people. Way more interesting than most of what he said today.
Oh, I'm president of National Honor Society, whatever, that's not the point here. That's there to explain why I had a meeting about the ceremony on Monday and why I have officially decided that things like simple logic are hard to come by; not to name names, but there were two people in that room and the lady whose name starts with an "L" was the sane one. The set-up for this ceremony scares me; there are so many places where things could become screwed up it's not even funny. I'm really curious if all banquets are this poorly managed three days before they're supposed to take place.
Oh and since Sara missed her word of the day yesterday, I'll provide one for us here:
cult–noun
1. - a particular system of religious worship, esp. with reference to its rites and ceremonies. 2. - an instance of great veneration of a person, ideal, or thing, esp. as manifested by a body of admirers: the physical fitness cult. 3. - the object of such devotion. 4. - a group or sect bound together by veneration of the same thing, person, ideal, etc. 5. - Sociology. a group having a sacred ideology and a set of rites centering around their sacred symbols. 6. - a religion or sect considered to be false, unorthodox, or extremist, with members often living outside of conventional society under the direction of a charismatic leader. 7. - the members of such a religion or sect. 8. - any system for treating human sickness that originated by a person usually claiming to have sole insight into the nature of disease, and that employs methods regarded as unorthodox or unscientific.
Using definition four, National Honor Society can be classified as a cult. For goodness sake, we light fricking candles before we pledge to do something. I'm reading the thing on Monday and I don't even know what it says. Oops.
Monday: Nasty Calc Quiz Tuesday: Head meets concrete in Epic Battle over consciousness Wednesday: Forgot Interact breakfast Thursday: Barely made it into uniform for the band concert/Played a game of musical horns with one of the sophomores. Tomorrow: Only the Devil knows.
Reasons why this is not hell week:
Monday: There was a box elder bug on the window next to me in AP Bio. We were both happy that the janitors finally turned on the upstairs heat vents. Yay! Tuesday: I took a seven hour nap when I got home and had a dream that I met Amy Klobuchar. She came to my house and I made her blueberry muffins. Wednesday: It rained. My dad made spaghetti. Thursday: That wonderful dry-mouth, slick-palmed, golden brass and sweaty sneaker feeling of Band concerts. Friday: No debate practice after school; no weekend plans. Maybe I'll rake leaves or go jogging. Jogging is always nice. And reading. Books are always nice. I bought a copy of Godless at Barnes and Noble last weekend. I'm looking forward to it!
Throughout this awful, awful week I kept thinking of Ophelia, and how, even when she finally went insane, she kept singing about flowers- pretty flowers- even to her death, surrounded by flowers. I may have lost my sanity this week... but I can still collect flowers.
How should I your true love know From another one? By his cockle hat and staff, And his sandal shoon.
He is dead and gone, lady, He is dead and gone; At his head a grass-green turf, At his heels a stone.
White his shroud as the mountain snow, Larded with sweet flowers, Which bewept to the grave did go With true-love showers.
*Sigh* He's cute, he's funny, and he can sing! What isn't there to love? I mean honestly, even his temper tantrums are cute... I'm not obssesed, I swear! Let's see, what have I been doing lately? Homework, work, class, fall fair, and that about sums it up. Hmmm, I was not very pleased with the Hatch Pawlenty race, but what's one to do? I was very excited tha Amy Klobuchar won, but the best peice of news was that John Ward beat that stuck up, creepy, cranky Paul Gazelka. Gazelka had it coming. I have a personal issue with Gazelka, and it's called the Cappucino. Long story short, he always wants his made first. This weekend, my mommy is coming to visit, and we are going shopping. We plan to spend the exact same amount shopping my step dad/brothers spent on deer hunting. We do every year. It's a blast. I must go now, paper to cut apart for the fall fair. Take care all, and if you're in the area for a debate tournament, give me a call, I can probably judge, or just hang out and tell you guys how much you rock. I think that's all I have to say right now, but if you watch the video clips, then the time should be about the same as a long post. I like my own logic...
So once again, I'm still alive. I registered for next semester's classes today, and I made it into all but one. (considering I had 6, that's pretty good from what I've been hearing) so I find out Friday if I get to take "Foundations of Education" (*yawn*) next semester or not. Sometimes I wonder why I even bother being an education major. oh yeah. that's right. because there's no way I'd get a job anywhere as a performance major. I remember now. ok... sorry... the last few weeks have been pretty tough. Not enough sleep, not enough time to think, too much homework, my playing hasn't been quite right in about three weeks, and it just kind of adds up. *shrug* oh well. I'm still here. just slightly frazzled. On the plus side, I have found a homework buddy in Sean Volk; he's in my Writing and Inquiry Seminar classes... needless to say we've survived a lot together. so the other night, instead of doing homework, we went to grab a bite to eat and actually relaxed. it was amazing. Next weekend I'm hosting a "let's get away from school for a few hours" kind of shindig in my parents' hotel room. that'll be fun. I'm really looking forward to it. :D Not much else to say... this is pretty much a homework distraction. so I'm going to be a good person and go now. Byes!
"If there was hope, it must lie in the proles, because only there, in those swarming disregarded masses, eighty-five percent of the population of Oceania, could the force to destroy the Party ever be generated."
This small, seemingly insignificant item is the key to my passage into womanhood. Yes, I realize it is blurry, and that the photo quality is not that great, but I am poud of this sticker. I, Rianna Kelash, voted today. HECK YES!! So yeah. That was the highlight of my day. That and getting my pretty awesome FYSem t-shirt, that says, "It's all about the money in FYSem number 20!" Umm...yeah. That's pretty much it. I can't think of anyting else, but I was soo excited that I had to share this.
So what, We've got VH1's number one 80's song on our side, so take that!
Hello everyone! I'm still alive. I promise. Homework and family have kept me from posting, but that's okay, because I really don't have anything to say. Hmmm. I bought a new winter jacket. It's very pretty. See:
I like it anyway...so yeah. I have suddenly become obssesed with 80s rock. I'm not sure what my issue is, but I now want a Bon Jovi album. No joke. Slap me if you wish, but let me just remind you that I will be laughing, since none of you can reach me. HAHA!! Like I said, my life is boring. For now. Mom is coming next week. She'll be a deer hunting widow, so we're going shopping. It's a different kind of hunting. My favorite kind, as a matter of fact. I think we're also going to a chocolate expo with my aunt Stacy. That could be fun! just taste chocolate the entire time. Oi vey am I going to get fat. OH WELL!!! I am officially in love with soy chai. I found a stor that carries Silk in a chai flavor. I love it. In fact, I think I will drink some right now, while watching my darling Stephen perform his show, and eating ice cream. Yep, this is the life. Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night!

So, my darling Rianna, I was talking to one of your lovely prodigy children last night and I learned an absolutely stunning thing: Brian finished third in varsity LD and Stephanie and Chelsea finished second in Open PF. I just thought that you should know as the proud mother of several of these shining stars.
Otherwise, I don't know much. I have flows to type and some serious amount of European History to tackle, but otherwise, I'm home free for tonight. I'm hoping this is a nice week, but that's probably too much to ask for.
Oh, and Max: I do believe the Criminal Masterminds will take you down. It is our group after all.
Today's quote was inspired by Crystal. I never thought yesterday would ever come. Congrats!

I've been back for two weeks and now I just want to die. I officially hate Chemistry; for no reason whatsoever it doesn't make sense. It does when I'm doing the problems and when I explain it to CaLyn or Rachel, but then I sit there and do the test and I blank mentally. Am I happy with my grade there? No. Will I improve it? Yes. Although, part of me wants to say, "Screw it. I'll take this next year," and drop it for next semester. I've never dropped a class before, but if I did drop one, I'd do that one.
I think Peterson has a plan to kill me. Two theses due next week in addition to a pointless and mind-numbing project. Shoot. Me. Now. I'm not sure what hell he has in store for Psychology but I'm sure it won't be as bad as Euro. At least, it better not be.
I'm going to work on Stats this weekend so I'm caught up and therefore don't have to worry about that class for a couple weeks. It's probably an awful way to work through the class, but the past two weeks have been hellish.
I will also be present for every class every day next week for the first time in five weeks. FIVE. The reason for this is only because Deebs and I (what I mean by "we" is "Deebs with Kara's imput") managed to convince Pritschet that it was insane to have a tournament next week. Of course, Pritschet appears to be alive, I have no idea how this works other than Pritschet's only teaching German and has an aide; after all, he's been gone just as much as Deebs and Deebs is barely walking. Of course, this could be empirical proof that the entire Pritschet family is some form of an alien race. Still, I want to be alive too.
Oh, and the SAT IIs are tomorrow and I'm so majorly screwed for the Chemistry section it's not even funny.
I really don't mean to bitch this much. In fact, it was only after I read it after it was posted that I realized this sounded bitter and cynical. In general, I am happy, as well adjusted as I ever was if slightly more apathetic, but I'm just exhausted and this is what happens when I'm exhausted. Sorry, everyone. I really am okay.
Alright: two words of the Thursday because I (again) missed last week's.

yeah. so I really am still alive. I promise. Though this week has been interesting. This week has been interesting. Tonight is going to be the third time that I haven't gone to bed before two this week. Sweet. The paper is due tomorrow at 1, but I'm going to try to finish it before I go to sleep tonight/tomorrow morning. yay. plus I need to practice for my lesson tomorrow afternoon, which, I have only done for an hour this week instead of twelve. oops. so tomorrow morning I'll practice for about an hour after sleeping for about 6. great fun. although these little study sessions are actually a lot of fun... mostly because we're all usually really tired and we sit and complain about O'Shaughnessy. oops. *shrug* oh well. college is great. no sleep, I don't do all my homework, and my grades are still good enough to keep my scholarship. kick.
on a rather unrelated note, I'm buying a flute for next semester... starting lessons because flute is going to be my minor instrument because I'm insane. I could do something like pick something I can already play, like piano, but I'm going to learn something new, like flute. bring it on. yay for more pulls on my time. *durrrrr* oh well. it's still fun. but I'm really, really looking forward to Thanksgiving.
so I'm gonna go do my paper now because we're going to Taco Bell in an hour and 20 mins. yay for late night revisions at Taco Bell where the other customers are drunk. sweet.
OH MY FRICKING GOSH!! THIS IS AMAZING!! Okay. So my grandma, who is pretty darn cool, by the way, sent me this link. I'm so starting a league. Anyone who wants in should post a comment here, and I'll add you to the league. It's going to be amazing. I've been waiting for this my entire political life. Seriously, I'm dorky like that. That's it. I was just really excited about it.
