And the schedule actually works...
so I passed out of at least the first semester of music theory. yay! I don't have to pay ridiculous amounts of money to be bored in class at 8 in the morning. That makes me happy. I finally got my schedule figured out... once I dropped Theory I had to find another class in it's stead, so I decided to take Education Psychology. I get to learn about how people think when they're learning. is that odd?

11:45a-2:30p Work
5p-6:40p (hopefully) Band
7p-10p Educational Psychology

Greetings from Concordia
Wow. I'm here. and still alive. *blink* Never thought I'd actually make it here. Mom, Dad, and Logan just left. I only cried a little. My major breakdown was yesterday shortly after Kara left. So they left and about 10 mins later I could speak a coherent sentence without panting in the middle. I'm proud of myself. (which is kind of sad) but here I am, waiting for the first amazingly fun orientation activity *eyeroll* oh. I'm allowed my toaster. Thank God.
oh. random event of the century. I'm related to my roommate. *blink* We're second cousins. and we didn't know it until we got here this morning. Her dad and my mom are cousins that haven't seen each other in like 25 years. So they both show up to move their children in today and meet. Kind of like the last episode of Will and Grace. Weird.....
Food, Fair, and Fun
Hee. The last three days were amazing. I had a blast. Wednesday morning, Mom, Dad, Logan and I left Brainerd for a three day jaunt to the cities. Such fun. :D
Wednesday, we went to "Body World," which was amazingly cool. (provided you can get past the "ohmygod there are dead people's remains in this room" thing) I highly recommend it. I also really, really liked the quotes on the walls of the exhibit. (I didn't write them down for lack of something to write with, but I found them very fitting for the exhibit and just all-around amazing.) After our Body Works experience, we checked into the hotel, then went to Hudson for dinner with my old neighbors from across the street, which is always fun. Logan and I took a little side trip to go visit AJ (one of my best friends from my Hudson Marching Band days) and although really, really confused as to why I was there, I now have her phone number. I had lost it. *nods* So we stayed there considerably too late on Wednesday, then departed for the hotel.
Thursday. 5:30 am. It's State Fair Day. We get up and get ready, and my aunt Barb gets to the hotel around 6, and we leave then. Arrive at the fair at 6:30, and begin eating. First was a foot-long hot dog (yes I know that's disgusting, but it's the only thing open at 6:30 and there's no way I hell I just woke up that early to -not- eat something.) Then we got a breakfast omelette, a cinnimon roll, cheese curds, and I know I'm forgetting something, but we just ate too much to remember it all. But, like every other year, we had a blast. Took a short nap around 2, that was very nice, though we got a couple of really odd comments from the people walking by. Oops. Apparently laying under an obnoxious blue tarp-thing inspires odd comments from people. Who knew? At about 5:00 that night, we had eaten a little bit of everything, I was getting a little bored, Logan's back was hurting, and the rain was coming, so we left. Got back to the hotel and went swimming/hot tubbing for about an hour before going back to the room and falling asleep during "Wild Wild West" at about 9-ish. Overall, a great day.
Friday, we woke up with intentions of going to Valleyfair and it just didn't happen. So we went to IHOP for breakfast (with a terrible waitress) then headed home. In the car, we watched "Office Space" and "Matchstick Men." I really liked both of them, though it's amazing how my dad can predict the somewhat complicated plot line but can't keep track of the basic elements of the movie. I laughed. Kara came over at about 5-ish, we took Logan home, and came and sat on the boat. Taylor and Arielle ended up coming over as well, and we sat around the fire until 11 when we decided to come inside and watch "Casablanca" which I have never seen, but I was exhausted and fell asleep halfway through the movie. Oops.
So Kara and Arielle spent the night last night, and this brings me to now. It's currently 8:28 am and I'm going to finish this, eat breakfast, and go pack. This will be my last post from home, I'm leaving this afternoon to go stay the night in a hotel in Moorhead then move in tomorrow morning. I'm scared. It'll be fun, I know it will, but I like the little nook I've made for myself here. I don't want to leave my nook. Not like I can do anything about it........ so I'm going to go now. I'll post something after the first few days of orientation. Until then, bye Brainerd. Thanks for all the great memories. *hugs*
A vaguely serious note....
I spent last week at Debate camp and by some twist of fortune, I ended up being one of the oldest ones there; a large majority of the Brainerd troupe were freshman (five of the eight) and so I spent a great deal of time with them, and while I was there, one subject came up during a walk with Jenna, Sara, Steph and I: cliques.
Let's not deny that we have them, because we do. You can walk do the halls of any high school anywhere and pick out the cliques; sure some people cross over between cliques, and sometimes we even have whole groups of people that somehow transcend this clique mentality, but there aren't many. And in Brainerd we have something slightly unique, we have cliques within our cliques.
Speaking from experience, I can say that I exist in one larger clique, the sixty to seventy of us partaking in Advanced Placement classes, and probably in a smaller clique within for the band misfits/drama kids (strangely enough, I am neither of those things), or maybe they are two separate cliques, I'm not sure. Despite this, I have the general impression that our class is more diverse in its cliques than many of the younger grades.
Jenna pointed out that she knows fifty people very well because she's had every class with these people every year since sixth grade, and I agree, when I entered the high school, I felt like I knew about 100 people, mainly due to my involvement in band, out of my class of just over 500. Of those 20, I would consider as people I could hold a decent conversation with, and of those 20, I counted probably three as true friends.
Now, entering my senior year, I would say I probably only know 20-30 more kids from my class, but there is a wonderful aspect of high school that I think middle school lacks, the ability to co-mingle with the other classes. In seventh and eighth grade, I found it hard to spend time with younger or older students just because as a general rule, the people we spend the most time with are those we have classes with. This also holds true in high school, but it's not a fact, Crystal and I had one class in common for exactly one month last year, and that was when we weren't actually connected at the hip; if you connect with someone, you'll make time for them, but I never would have met Crystal if we hadn't been in AP Calc together the year before and been younger than everyone else in the class.
Anyway there is a point to this, Jenna is a freshman this year, so is my sister. My sister and Jenna (along with everyone else at Debate camp) work in very different circles; Debate kids in my old position of the Honors Program kids, and my sister in the art/band/border-line goth group, but here's something interesting to note. Jenna expressed an interest in spending time with people outside of her core group, not that she didn't think that in the end they would be the ones that she spent the most time with just because they don't have the most in common, but my sister was relatively hostile about her opinion of them; she gave no indication that she would like to know any of them at all, and I thought that was strange since I thought that Jenna and my sister would get along quite well.
I guess what I'm curious about is what is it about this clique that my sister finds so undesirable? Are they stuck up because they've been in Honors since forever ago? Do the other students perceive them that way just because of this? Really, there isn't that big of a difference between the homework load for Honors students and regular students at this stage, nor is the curriculum all that different either, so I don't quite understand this.
Granted, I was certainly not the best of friends with anyone outside of the Honors Program during my stint in it. I do remember a certain amount of resentment from a couple people I know, but that more due to certain people's attitude towards them and not about the group as a whole.
So, what was I trying to say, I'm not actually sure, my brain is slightly fuzzy right now, but I guess I'm wondering why cliques exist? And do they have to? I wouldn't mind getting to know other people in my class I never spend time with because we don't have classes together, but I just don't understand how that would happen, and maybe that's why cliques exist, to keep the groups that do spend all their time together, together.
A side note; my sister's best friend is also someone she has not been placed in the same team with since seventh/sixth(?) grade, but they have managed to remain very good friends throughout it all despite band being their only common class, but they're also scarily similar at times, with their music, their likes, their dyed hair... I'm not saying that it's impossible to be friends with people outside of those you see every day; I'm just say it's harder.
There really was no point to this, I'm just spewing, feel free to ignore.

Vacation!
My vacation is amazing. I was done working on Sunday, and that night I went to Logan's and he made us dinner... it was steak, baby potatoes, pea pod thingy-s, and fake wine. It was amazingly delicious. (a lot of food, but delicious nonetheless) then Arielle came over for like an hour and at about 9:30 she calls and tells Logan that he's a jerk and that if he's going to continue being a jerk then they have no reason to be friends anymore. wtf? That night they acted no differently than normal and this little spat comes out of nowhere. Anyways, they fixed it yesterday so it's better now. I never did understand them....
Monday, I made a "Happy Retirement Cheri" cake for one of the ladies at work as a practical joke, so I got up and made the cake and discovered that icing and I don't get along so I had Taylor come over and decorate it for me (and he did a very good job... I was impressed) and we spent the rest of the day veging then mom and dad came home and we went to Dairy Queen for ice cream. (random, but I'm not complaining.)
Tuesday, I slept until noonish and mom took a half day of vacation and so we went out to lunch at Dave's pizza (yum) then went bowling, which was much more successful than the last time I tried bowling. I finished with a 140 average for the series... 10 pins under my average but I've been bowling twice in the last 4 months. After bowling, was shopping. Although I had been hoping to buy much more, I managed to make it home with a new pair of sneakers, (because mine have been falling apart for the last three months or so) two bath towels for school, and a mini fridge for school. Not bad. Then I went to Arielle's house for the night, we listened to the A Cappella Choir CD (I can't believe they cut Tara's solo. evil.) outside on a blanket, then sang for each other. (her mom has a really nice voice... it's smooth when she wants it to be) After that, we decided to go look at the stars by the road because it was darker over there, and I decided it would be fun to lay in the middle of the road and look at the pretty stars. and it would have been fun, except Arielle was losing her mind that a car was going to come around the corner with its lights off and hit me. *eyeroll* it was like midnight. *shrug* oh well. Then we went back inside and watched "Coyote Ugly." I like that movie. :D
Wednesday - Woke up at Arielle's house and had breakfast and she dropped me off at home. Mom called for lunch at noon, and we went to Sawmill Inn. (whatever it's called now that it's not Ember's anymore) I like their food. (well... I should... I used to work there.) anyways, after that I went to Jann's. (yes, Jann's. not Logan's. he was at work.) and we watched "Just Friends," which was amazingly funny. Then we put in "Divine Secrets of the YaYa Sisterhood" which Jann bought for a girls' night in about four years ago, but somehow that fell through and so she and I watched it for about 45 minutes until she decided it wasn't funny like she was expecting so we turned it off, in favor of "Benji." Now, the only reason that they own "Benji" is because the dog looks like their dog, Jessie. So we watch about 10 minutes of that before the acting is so horrible that we turn it off. Then we watched Oprah for about 5 minutes until we got disgusted with the girl on there and decided that she was faking it to be on TV... then Logan came home and got that "oh frick they've been home alone together for a large amount of time / what did they tell each other?" look. Hee. I'm evil. I like Jann. She's entertaining. (and yes, I do realize how weird it is that I can spend large amounts of time with my boyfriend's mother, and choose to do so.) Came home last night at a decent hour.... I've decided that Logan needs sleep (significantly moreso than I) plus Jann instated a "you need to go home today" rule. I had my one 1:30 hurrah so now I'll be responsible.
Thursday - This might be the most productive day I've had. *laughs* I woke up at about 10:30 and read "Mountains Beyond Mountains" for school until about 11:30, when I had breakfast, then fell asleep on the couch. Woke up at about quarter to two, and watched TV with dad then had a snack and came and posted this. and what am I going to do now? I'm going to watch a movie I haven't seen in forever: "The Sound of Music." yeah. that's right. I watch old musicals voluntarily. *nerdyyyyyyyyy*
and tomorrow Kara comes back! Yay!
If you've made it this far, congradulations. Above is the "yay I'm happy" section, and below is the "I bother myself" section... so if you want to read it, go for it, but most people would do well just to ignore it.
so I realize that everyone has their little quirks... but my quirks irritate me... that's insane! My own quirks drive me absolutely up the wall. I have this little psychological complex... I'm sure if it's actually that, but that's what I'm going to call it. I have this unending belief that you aren't allowed to know that I'm not perfect. Like if I make stupid mistakes I replay them in my head for the next week solid and think about what an idiot I am... is that normal? or sane? I really don't think so. and it's really bad with my music. I have a really hard time listening to recordings of myself because they're not perfect and I can't forgive myself. So I have finally acknowledged the fact that I have lost my mind. :D
Curfew...
So. My parents have officially gone insane. They abolished my curfew on Sunday. So I can get home whenever I want as long as they know where I am. *blink* My parents. The ones that have set my curfew at 11 forever. 11 no later. *blink* wait... I got midnight once or twice. So on Tuesday I stayed out until about quarter to two, just because I could. It was really odd; I got home that late and it was no problem. Weird. I am officially in love with going to college. I'll miss the people, but the freedoms gained are amazing. :D
