Updates 'n such.

Good evening everyone! (or, I guess, it's almost good morning... technically...)

I have a few basic updates about life in general. Overall, life is good. I'm still obscenely busy and don't get as much sleep as I should, but I have been really good about my practicing at 2 hours per day (1.5 on clarinet, .5 on flute) which is much, MUCH better than last year. I have been asked to audition for the pit for the musical, which I'm super excited for. Besides the experience, I get paid $250, which will be awesome (I'm still poor) plus I get to play more, which is always fun.

On the downside, however, I think I'm developing carpel tunnel syndrome. Not lying. Yesterday I was practicing and my wrist got really sore on the top side, then I played my lesson today and went to work and orchestra, and by the end of the night my wrist was dully aching for the rest of the night... I was instructed to purchase a neck strap and avoid practicing as much until it gets better... granted, the fact that I'm sitting here typing this probably isn't great, but it's feeling better now.

So I'll keep you guys updated whenever I get free time as it comes up, otherwise, I hope you're all doing well and not drowning in classes/homework, and I'll talk to you all later!

College life

I have noticed several things now that I attend college. When people say right before tests, you realize how many people are actually in your class, they weren't lying. My Biogeography lecture easily had an extra 150 people today; the test is on Friday.

I have decided to continue adding really stupid/funny/bizarre quotes from my classes.

Today's winner: "Doesn't Egypt have a lot of oil? It's in the Middle East." - courtesy of GEOG 1372: Geography of Global Cities.

Also, I have three teachers that are absolutely horrific dressers. So, our newest segment on the blog shall be: Examples of Really Bad Style Choices: Edition Kara's Professors. (Everyone else, please feel free to put in your own examples).

Case one: I show up to a class and my professor is standing in the front of the class in an Anime Hawaiian Shirt -- today's selection was a Transformers Hawaiian Shirt -- in fact as far as I know, the man only owns Hawaiian shirts.

Case two: I show up for class and my professor is wearing a map of the world -- t-shirt style. The front had North and South America and the back had the rest of the world. It was a gift from the University of Illinois.

Case three: I show up for class and my professor is wearing a floor length floral print sack dress with a yellow base, and some very clunky and ugly black sandals.

Now, granted, do I show up to class in makeup with any real effort put in every day (or even very often)? No, of course not. In fact, today, I put on a pair of jeans and a sweatshirt and said, "I don't want to think" and wandered off to class.

But, I don't wear Hawaiian shirts of any kind nor do I wear shapeless dresses or map themed clothing. Plus, I have really, really cute sweaters I am just dying to wear.

See, this is what college does to you. Makes you pay attention to ridiculous details (which I paid attention to before, but it's more fun now).

I'm off; enjoy your day!

College things

I've been in classes for over a week now, so I'm sure I'm an expert on all things college like. So here are some of my observations:

+ Admission to college does not equal a guaranteed boost in intelligence
+ When it comes to lecturing, most people actually really suck at it.
+ Having English as your first language as a TA of Americans is a huge plus (not like I would know as both of my TAs are foreign).
+ College professors still say really stupid things.
+ Along the same vein, people with personalities are inherently more interesting than people without.

And because I enjoy doing this, a list of really strange, stupid or funny things I have heard since I have arrived.

"A lot of hurricanes hit the coast of South America." -- Yeah because we're always hearing about the losses in Brazil and Venezuela when there's a hurricane.

A "great site" being defined as an excellent place for a city with natural fortifications or access to natural harbors and things of that nature. - "West Point, NY is a great site." "How so?" "There's a military academy there." Because the military is a natural physical feature.

"As you can see there are lots of big squares things, which means you're looking at the Western States."

"Deadly swarms of honey bees."

See, I've learned lots of things. :)

So I'm Still Alive...

Where to even start. I don't even know where I left off. So lets start in July, shall we? This will be highly abbreviated, so if you want more details on some portion on my life, just let me know. July. The woman I was interning for found out she needed surgery, so instead of hiring a temp, they extended me for the rest of the summer, up through August 31st. Suddenly, I was attempting to do the work of a woman who should be sainted. I kid you not. I still have no fricking idea what she does. Anyway...I apparently didn't fail miserably, because I got two letters of recommendation, a thank you card I could use as a letter of recommendation, and two cakes. Somewhere between July and September, I got a letter from Molly, my supervisor at the Call Center here at Hamline, asking me to come back as a student supervisor, meaning I got promoted. Score. So training has been amazing, and I can't wait to start calling tomorrow. We have a lot of new callers I'm really excited to get to know.
Now I'm back at school, and loving it. I have the best roommates in the world we do normal stuff, like girl talk and watch movies, and shop, but they also push me to try new things. I can now say I've done a tarot reading. It's actually a pretty cool system. I'll talk about it later. The room we're living in is great too. We have a TON of space, wood floors, and our own bathroom. We have to put up with ghosts or whatever it is that comes out of our Harry Potter cupboard in our closet, but it's all good.
Classes started and I think it's all going to work. I had to drop Political Research and Analysis, because I just wasn't ready for it. Next year. Calculus is NOT killing me, which is really, really cool. I actually enjoy the class.
In other news, Jessica and I are starting up College Democrats on campus again, and it's coming back with a bang! Our College Republicans won't know what hit them. All in all...life is going all right. And I am still alive.

AP College

Hi Guys!
College is pretty nifty, I must say. All of my English classes are going really well and I've just finished my first two college essays. Yay! Anyway, I was reading down the line here and noticed a certain pattern among us Freshmen... an adoration of Niemi. In fact (thanks to her class discussions, essay writing, journaling, and passage analysis) Michelle and I have come up with a little chant:

We love Niemi yes we do!
We love Niemi how about you?

I went clothes shopping!

So, my floor decided that homework was overrated today and 16 of us went to the Mall of America via the lightrail, which is good because I was in need of some shirts, so I now own two cute tops and a pair of brown flats.

One!

Two!

And cute shoes!

And then I came back and read two chapters worth of homework. See, productive day!

Lovely, Lovely, Lovely

Today is such a lovely day! It's sunny and the breeze is just cool enough to keep you from getting too overheated! The school year is going really well for me. I'm not nearly as busy as Crystal (which is good) but still pretty busy. I will be leading a Bible study this year and am super excited to get that rolling. The first study will be next Sunday. College is pretty much college...I go to class, sometimes pay attention, sometimes sleep. I guess my life isn't really all that interesting right now, although it sure feels like an adventure for some reason. There's a big plan and I'm playing my part in it...I'm not sure what that part is, but when I find out I know it's going to be awesome!
So tonight I went to the Newman center and played Guesstures, Jenga, and Catch Phrase. How long has it been since any of you have played Jenga...seriously now! It was so cool...even though I lost all 3 times. I was really close to winning the third time, but no such luck. I'm going to the first Bison football game tomorrow...I think James is going to paint himself...that should be interesting to say the least. Oh! On a totally random note, James and I have decided what we're going to be for Halloween. I'll give you a hint...His nickname would be Mik and mine would be Don. Ok...try and figure it out!
Anyway, it sounds like you all are doing pretty well which is fantastic! I should get going though, it's bedtime for Sarah!
